Dr. Michael Fielden is an ophthalmologist specialized in medical retina. Originally from Germany, he was raised in Calgary. He received a Bachelor of Science with Distinction in 1999 from Queen’s University. This was followed by a Doctor of Medicine with Honours from the University of Toronto in 2003. In 2008, he completed his five-year residency in ophthalmology at the University of Ottawa Eye Institute. He then returned to Calgary for an intensive fellowship in retina with Calgary Retina Consultants at the University of Calgary.
He was recognized with numerous awards and scholarships during his education including the Dean’s Honour List, the highest standing in his medical school class, an awarded membership in the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, research awards, and the highest standing (99th percentile) in his exams every year of his residency.
Dr. Fielden was the past president of the Retina Society of Alberta. He is a member of the Alberta Medical Association, Canadian Medical Association, Canadian Ophthalmological Society and the American Society of Retina Specialists. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Fielden is a partner with Calgary Retina Consultants at the Southern Alberta Eye Centre and an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Calgary. He has a busy clinical retinal practice and performs all medical retinal procedures in the office including lasers and ocular injections.
He has a special interest in diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. He participates in medical student, resident and fellow education. Dr. Fielden is a frequent lecturer to a variety of health care professionals including at international retina meetings. He participates actively in clinical research as a principal investigator and has numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.
Dr. Fielden lives in Calgary with his wife and four children and is an active member in his community, through church and youth-focused initiatives.
